If you want to explore all your academic options, you're not alone — about 12 percent of Colby-Sawyer applicants list their major as undeclared. Even after choosing a major, most college students (up to 80 percent in some surveys) switch at least once. And that’s okay, because it means you’re exploring your options and finding your passions.

Colby-Sawyer's supportive, close-knit community is the perfect place to take an academic adventure that will unleash your curiosity and lead you to a major, whether in your first semester or your sophomore year. Here, you are encouraged to discover your abilities, values and goals and use them to shape your definition of a successful future. And, Colby-Sawyer’s experienced advisers and professors will be by your side to help you find your way.

During the exploration process, you'll enjoy hands-on, personal and holistic educational experiences through Colby-Sawyer's Liberal Education Program requirements. Two writing intensive courses, one applied quantitative literacy course, a first-year symposium, an integrative studies course and other courses will help you to build credits as you discover your interests before committing to a major.

And, at Colby-Sawyer, every student in every major completes an internship that complements their transformative experience. In fact, 98.8 percent of our 2017 graduates were employed and/or in graduate school within six months of graduation, and 51 percent had a job offer from their internship or clinical sites.

Develop Your Own Major

With the self-designed major, you can combine interests from multiple academic areas to build your own program of study. Working with a faculty advisor, you'll develop a unique program proposal and present it to an academic panel for approval.
