At Adventures in Learning (AIL) we believe that education is a lifelong pursuit and that learning later means living greater. That's why we offer courses, lectures, trips and discussions throughout the year on a wide variety of topics, led by individuals who are knowledgeable and passionate about a particular subject and who are willing to share that passion with others. No tests, no grades, no pressure -- just the joy of learning.

We invite you to join us!

The mission of Adventures in Learning is to provide a lifelong learning experience for adults with an interest in the world of ideas and who wish to continue their intellectual growth in an informal setting. AIL will achieve this mission by offering a diverse array of stimulating courses and programs throughout the year in the Kearsarge-Lake Sunapee region.

The AIL office is located in Colby Homestead, the white building on Main Street one driveway to the right of Chargers Road as you face the college. Facing Colby Homestead, the AIL entrance is on the far left of the building.

Individuals seeking lifelong education, intellectual stimulation and the rewards that come from education may join. Membership is open to the public and there are no academic prerequisites. Courses offered in the fall, winter and spring terms are for members only. For the summer term non-members can take courses, but at a slightly higher fee than members.

AIL's fiscal year is July 1 - June 30. An annual, single membership costs $50.00.

The Fall 2019 Course Catalog is available for download or viewing online as a PDF.

The individuals who are drawn to the AIL program as course participants and as study leaders seek continued intellectual challenges but also come with a collective wealth of accumulated knowledge. Many have unique skills and professional experience to impart to their peers and thereby provide a ready-made “faculty” of volunteer study group leaders. Courses are non-credit and without exams and are offered over a three to four week or five to eight week period in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. The two-hour weekly, morning or afternoon class sessions are held in venues in New London and in surrounding towns.

Topics for study vary each term, and new courses are regularly created according to the interests and availability of qualified study group leaders. Subjects studied and discussed include history, literature, the sciences, international affairs, current events, and more. Within a very short time, AIL participants become friends in a relaxed learning atmosphere where they welcome and respect the ideas and opinions offered by their peers in discussions.

Study group leaders and their ideas for new AIL courses are always welcome. Please click on the link in left-hand bar on this page called "Curriculum/Study Group Leader Forms" to learn more about becoming a study leader for AIL.

The AIL web pages include information on membership, course catalogs, answers to frequently asked questions about AIL, the AIL newsletter, Horizons Extra, study leader information and much more. Please click on the links in the left-hand column for more information.
